Cowgirls Advance to ASC Final

SEGUIN, Texas - For the second straight season, Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team has earned a right to play in the American Southwest Conference Tournament final after a pair of wins on Friday in the tournament in Seguin.

The Cowgirls defeated ASC East No. 1 seed East Texas Baptist in the semifinals, 30-27, 30-26, 27-30, 30-26. It is the second straight year the Cowgirls have defeated ETBU in the semifinals of the tournament.

Chelsea Buetow was strong for the Cowgirls with a team-high 24 kills. Virginia Aguilar and Kaela Parnell added 13 kills and Megan Lawrence chipped in 12 in the Cowgirls' balanced attack.

Amanda Curry had 49 assists and Holly Amerena led the defense with 23 digs.

HSU will play Texas-Dallas in the finals. UTD won the only meeting between the two teams this season in a hard-fought fifth game 28-30, 30-28, 30-26, 26-30, 19-17.

In the first match, the Cowgirls won a four-game match over Mary Hardin-Baylor 30-27, 17-30, 30-18, 30-27. Chelsea Buetow led the Cowgirls effort with 15 kills. Virginia Aguilar added 14 kills. Buetow added 11 digs for a double-double. UMHB ends its season with a record of 9-22.

HSU (18-14) has now won six straight matches. The Cowgirls will be going for the first ASC volleyball title in school history. HSU lost in three games to Austin College last year in the final. ETBU ends its season with a record of 19-12.

The match will be broadcast on the radio at Gospel 90.5 FM in Abilene.
