LONGVIEW, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team made school history on Friday when it won two matches at the American Southwest Conference Crossover Tournament in Longview and sealed its first trip to the ASC Tournament. The Cowgirls rallied for a five game win over UT-Dallas, 30-17, 27-30, 28-30, 30-22, 16-14. HSU came out strong and took the first game 30-17, hitting .467 in the process. The Comets battled back winning two tight games, before the Cowgirls won in game four. HSU won the fifth game as they hit .172, while UTD hit -.053. HSU was led by Virginia Aguilar's 14 kills and freshmen Taylor McFarland (13) and Hannah Toole (12) also hit double digits in kills. Amanda Keithley had 45 assists running the offense and Melanie Wallace had 17 digs. Brittany Fowler led UTD with 20 kills. In the nightcap, the Cowgirls dropped host LeTourneau, 30-24, 30-26, 30-24. Toole was the top hitter for the Cowgirls with 14 kills. Amber Montgomery had 15 digs. Hardin-Simmons improved to 16-7 on the year and 15-1 in ASC play. HSU plays East Texas Baptist and Mississippi College on Saturday. A pair of wins would clinch the Cowgirls first-ever ASC West title. |
