ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons split a pair of matches in the American Southwest Conference crossover tournament, Friday evening at the Mabee Athletic Complex, defeating Texas-Tyler 30-26, 30-21, 24-30, 30-28 and falling in three to nationally-ranked Austin College, 30-19, 31-29, 30-25. In the first match, the Cowgirls downed UT-Tyler 30-26, 30-21, 24-30, 30-28. Freshman Taylor McFarland was the hitting star with 19 kills and Virginia Aguilar added 18 kills. The Cowgirl block was also solid with 12 team blocks. Chelsea Buetow led the way with seven blocks. She also added 10 kills. Melanie Wallace led the defense with 24 digs. Amanda Keithley added 14 digs and ran the offense with 52 kills. HSU hit .272 for the match. Jessica Lightfoot had 15 kills to lead the Patriots. In the nightcap, the Cowgirls came out slow in the first game and then played the Kangaroos two tough games. The Cowgirls led 29-28 in the second game, before the `Roos made a late comeback to win 31-29. Aguilar led the Cowgirls with 12 kills in the Austin College match. Diana Gonzalez (11 kills) and Jessica Rose (10 kills) led a balanced AC attack. The loss snapped the Cowgirls' school-record 10-match winning streak in ASC play. HSU is now 10-6 on the year and 9-1 in ASC play. Austin College improved to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in league play. UT-Tyler fell to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in conference action. The Cowgirls are off until Tuesday when they host McMurry. |
