Cowgirls Topple Indians in Five

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team remained atop the American Southwest Conference standings with a 30-18, 21-30, 30-20, 27-30, 15-12 win at crosstown rival McMurry, Tuesday night at Kimbrell Arena.

The Cowgirls took control of the match in the first game when they one 11 straight points on Holly Amerena's serve. The Cowgirls went on to dominate the game 30-18 and hit .400 in the first game. McMurry won game two 30-21, when the Cowgirls hit negative .103.

HSU came back with an easy 30-20 third game. McMurry pulled away late to force a fifth game, but the Cowgirls prevailed in five. The Indians jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Cowgirls went to Virginia Aguilar for back-to-back kills to make it 4-3. The game went back and forth and was tied 10-10.

That is when Aguilar took over the match with two straight kills. Melanie Wallace then had an ace to make it 13-11. A block for the Indians moved it to 13-12, but Aguilar responded with a kill and Ali Childers ended the match with a kill.

HSU was led by Aguilar's 15 kills. Three other Cowgirls hit double figures in kills - Ali Childers added 14, Chelsea Buetow had 13 and Taylor McFarland added 11. Amanda Keithley ran the offense with 58 assists. Amber Montgomery and Wallace had 17 digs each. Kerri Mueth had 19 kills for the Indians.

The win snapped an eight-match winning streak against the Indians. The Cowgirls are 4-5 overall and 3-0 in ASC West play. The Indians fell to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

HSU hosts defending league champion Texas Lutheran on Friday evening at the Mabee Complex.
