Cowgirls Win Conference Opener

ALPINE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team won its American Southwest Conference opener with a 32-30, 30-17, 22-30, 30-25 win over Sul Ross State, Thursday evening in Alpine.

The Cowgirls hit .166 as a team and junior Virginia Aguilar led the way with 12 kills. Chelsea Buetow had nine kills and Amber Montgomery added seven to lead a balanced Cowgirl attack.

Defensively, Wallace had 27 digs to lead the team and Montgomery added 20. Ali Childers dug up 16 balls and freshman Krystal Ziehe and junior setter Holly Amerena added 12 digs each.

Amerena ran the offense effectively with 36 assists, filling in for injured starter Amanda Keithley.

The Cowgirls will take the weekend off before hosting Howard Payne on Wednesday at the Mabee Complex. HSU is now 2-3 on the year and Sul Ross State fell to 3-4.
