GEORGETOWN, Texas -The women's tennis team finished this past weekend with great things to look forward to for the spring season. The Cowgirls competed at the ITA Regional Tournament in Georgetown, Texas. Senior Bobbye Thompson was seeded No.14 and junior Nancy Chandler No.5 in the singles main draw. While double teams of Thompson/Chandler seeded No.4 and senior Candace Hanes and sophomore Stephanie Haynes were seeded No.7. In the singles main draw, all eight Cowgirls passed the first round. In the round of 64, five Cowgirls remained. Only two of the Cowgirls would then advance to the quarterfinals. Bobbye Thompson defeated No.3 seed Lauren Row of Southwestern 6-4, 7-6(7-3) to advance to the quarterfinals. Also Nancy Chandler defeated No.10 seed Melanie Kurtz of Southwestern 7-5,6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Both Cowgirls fought in their quarterfinal matches but came up short of the semifinals. No.19 seed Berica Day of Trinity defeated Thompson 3-6,2-6 and No.2 seed Megan Suarez of Trinity defeated Chandler 1-6,4-6. In doubles action, HSU's Thompson/Chandler made the semifinals before falling to No.1 seed Smith/Ulrich of Trinity 8-2. The freshman duo of McKenzie Swindle and Allison Baker defeated Patterson/Williams of Howard Payne 8-2, Curry/Jackson of Hendrix 8-2, and No.8 seed Mendillo/Suarez of Trinity 8-3 before advancing to the quarterfinals. In the quarters they were defeated by No.3 seed Kurtz/Row of Southwestern 5-8. Junior Sarah Bartlett teamed with freshman Annagrace Fincher to defeat Bryant/Martinez 8-2 of Texas Lutheran and then was defeated by No.2 Austin/McGowen of Trinity 0-8 in the round of 16. HSU's duo of senior Candace Hanes and sophomore Stephanie Haynes had some close matches but made the quarterfinals where teammates Thompson/Chandler defeated them 4-8. In second round match up Hanes/Haynes met Kunz/Ralston of Linfield and defeated them 9-7. Then defeated Howard Payne's Heston/Lopez 8-6. The Cowgirls overall had a great weekend. This ends the Cowgirls fall season, but they will open up their traditional season in the spring. |
