March 31, 2007
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's tennis team had won of its toughest matches in its 61-match American Southwest Conference winning streak, but the Cowgirls were able to win the close matches to extend its streak with a 6-3 win over Howard Payne, Saturday evening in Brownwood. HSU had defeated Hendrix College earlier in the morning, 9-0 at the Streich Tennis Center on the HSU campus. With the two wins the Cowgirls are now 6-2 on the year and are 3-0 in ASC West play. Against Hendrix, the Cowgirls won all of the close matches and cruised to the victory. The Cowgirls won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead against Howard Payne. The Cowgirls then had two players rally from a set down to win singles matches. Hazle de la Torre was down a set and 4-1 in the second before rallying to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Bria Camarillo won at No. 4 singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The win goes a long way in the Cowgirls bid to host the ASC Tennis Championships as the first place ASC West women's team earns the right to host the men's and women's championship later this month. Howard Payne was widely considered the Cowgirls' top competitor for the ASC West title. The Cowgirls will host Schreiner at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Streich Tennis Center, before hosting crosstown rival McMurry on Monday. |
