March 23, 2004
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' softball team won its first-ever game at the new Cowgirl Softball Complex, when it split a doubleheader with Northwood, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Cowgirls lost the first game by virtue of the run-rule 10-1 and then followed it up with a 7-2 win in the nightcap. In game one, the Cowgirls scored their lone run in the third when Jessica Stove forced in Ashley Lang on a bases loaded walk. Lang had two of the Cowgirls' five hits. Brandi Wicker (2-6) took the loss on the mound for the Cowgirls. In the nightcap, the Cowgirls answered Northwood's first-inning run with a tally of their own. Lang had a walk and moved to second on an Amber Pierce single. Freshman catcher Ember Strand drove her home with an RBI single. The Cowgirls picked up three more runs in the third inning. Tawna Jacobs had a single, followed by a Cassie Elder Walk and a Miranda Rousett single to load the bases. With two outs, Lang hit a three-run double to right center to give the Cowgirls a 4-1 lead. HSU added three more runs in the fourth inning. Mia Lopez had a single to left, and moved to third when Lang reached on an error. Amber Pierce then doubled in Lopez to knock out Northwood starter Crystal Cruz. Strand greeted new pitcher Lee Ann Cumbie with a run scoring single. Keri Ivey then singled in Pierce to end the Cowgirls scoring. Ivey got the win mound in game two. After throwing three and two-third innings of relief in game one, she threw a complete-game, scattering seven hits. Strand and Pierce each had three hits for the Cowgirls. HSU is now 3-13 on the year and travels to Schreiner for ASC play this weekend. Northwood is 10-15 on the year. |
