BROWNWOOD, Texas - Hardin-Simmons swept an American Southwest Conference softball doubleheader from Howard Payne, 11-1 and 13-3, Tuesday afternoon at the HPU Softball Field in Brownwood. In the first game. HSU scored two runs in the second inning. Sadyie Hill reached on an a two-base error. Lydia Bradley doubled and Hill and Bradley came around on an error. Hill led off the fourth with a home run. HSU opened the game up in the sixth with four runs. Hill led off with a single and moved to third when Bradley reached on one of 11 errors by HPU on the day. Miranda Rousset followed with an RBI-single. Jennifer Cooper followed with an RBI single. Cooper and Rousset moved up on a double steal and then Cooper stole home and Rousset came in on an error. In the seventh Arin Spence and Megan Murrey led off with back-to-back singles. Bradley then singled in Spence and Cooper followed with a three-run home run. Cooper was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Cortez, Hill and Bradley each had two hits. Bradley and Hill scored three runs each. Spence improved to 12-2 on the year on the mound with a seven-hitter. Tiffany Wolfe took the loss for Howard Payne. In the second game it was more of the same for the Cowgirls as it eventually ended in a five-inning run-rule. HSU pounded out 11 hits and did not commit an error. Nicole Cortez led off the first for the Cowgirls with a double, she moved to third on a Courtney Stewart single and then stole home. Stewart eventually came around to score on a Hill single. In the second inning, Katy Chester singled and came around to score on an error. In the third Spence led off with a single and Hill followed with a two-run homer. Bradley followed with a double and later scored on a Chester RBI ground out. Stewart reached on an error to start the fourth and came home on a Spence two-run homer. Jennifer Cooper later had an RBI single in the inning. Bradley capped the scoring in the fifth with a grand slam, bringing in Cortez who had reached on an error, Spence who had walked and Hill who was hit by a pitch. Sara Lemons earned the win on the mound for the Cowgirls to even her record at 1-1. Jill McLaughlin got the loss for HPU. At the plate, Bradley had three hits and drove in four runs. Spence was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored, Cortez added three hits and Hill had three RBIs and three runs. HSU is now 16-4 on the year and 9-3 in ASC action. Howard Payne fell to 7-15 overall and 5-7 in league play. HSU hosts Schreiner in a four-game set, starting Thursday at Cowgirl Field. |
