Cowgirls Split With UMHB

BELTON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin-Baylor split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon in Belton. Arin Spence threw a one-hitter in the 3-0 win and the Cowgirls fell 2-1 in the nightcap.

Hardin-Simmons is 13-3 overall and 6-2 in the ASC. UMHB is now 7-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play on the season.

Spence was dominating in game one as the Cowgirls posted a 3-0 victory. HSU scored its first run on Nicole Cortez's RBI double in the top of the second and made it 3-0 on Lydia Bradley's two-run homer in the top of the third. Kelly Corbin had UMHB's only hit on an infield single in the bottom of the third inning. Spence improved to 11-0 while striking out 10 and walking four. Jackilyn Michel took the loss for UMHB to drop to 3-2. She scattered five hits and gave up two earned runs in three innings. Cortez had two hits for the Cowgirls.

The Crusaders put together three hits in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead in game two. Danielle Thomas came home to score on Amanda Weckwerth's RBI double. The Cowgirls tied the game on Bradley's solo home run to left field in the top of the second. UMHB finally pushed across what proved to be the game winner when Jennifer Pietrowski scored on Sandra Hernandez's RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth. HSU loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth but a fielder's choice and a popout ended the threat.

Daphne Kahlig got the win for UMHB to raise her record to 3-1 on the year. Kahlig scattered five hits in a complete-game performance. Spence took the loss for HSU to drop to 11-1 on the year. She gave up five hits and both runs in four innings of work. Kacie Kripner had two hits for UMHB and Cortez had a pair of hits for the Cowgirls.

The two teams will close out the series with another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Belton. The Crusaders and Cowgirls will face off at 1:00 PM at Dee Dillon Field.
