LONGVIEW, Texas - Arin Spence threw a perfect game as Hardin-Simmons defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 13-0, and then came back with 12 strikeouts against defending American Southwest Conference champions and No. 24 East Texas Baptist as the Cowgirls won 4-2 in the first day of the LeTourneau Softball Classic. In the perfect game Spence struck out seven batters in the game and only one ball made it out of the infield (a pop-up to left). She also added a three-run home run and had two hits and scored three runs. Shortstop Miranda Rousset also had a three-run homer and drove in four runs and Sadyie Hill was 4-for-4 at the plate. In the East Texas Baptist game the Cowgirls trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning before exploding for four runs to take the win. In the third ETBU took advantage of a two out error and scored a run and in the fourth when they strung together three hits for a run. HSU scored its four runs when Hill walked to lead off the inning and Mia Lopez pinch ran for her. Lydia Bradley singled to left and Ashley Abney pinch ran for hit. Rousset walked to load the bases with no one out. Casey Winterroth came off the bench for a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to center to give the Cowgirls a run. After a Katy Chester single to third reloaded the bases, Nicole Cortez singled in Abney and Rousett. Courtney Stewart then singled in Chester for the fourth run. The Cowgirls are now 10-2 on the season and have won seven of their last eight games. HSU plays two games on Saturday. |
