Nov. 20, 2003 RICHARDSON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team dominated the American Southwest Conference and the all-conference teams reflect that as four players were named All-ASC, seven All-ASC West First Team and two were players of the year in the West Division.
Erika Lay was named the ASC West Offensive Player of
the Year in her only season with the Cowgirls. The senior transfer from
Texas-El Paso scored 12 goals and had seven assists. Junior Mollie Porter
was named ASC West Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight
season.
Marcus Wood was named ASC West Coach of the Year for
the third time.
Four Cowgirls were named to the All-ASC team which is
comprised of the best players from each division. Lay and Porter joined
freshman midfielder Whitney Piendak and junior goalkeeper Rachel Goold on
the team.
Each team is limited to nominating seven players for
ASC All-Division honors and all seven Cowgirls were named to the first
team. Sophomore defender Natalie Longhofer, sophomore forward Cathy
Castagnos, and sophomore midfielder Kala Chalman all were on the first
team.
HSU finished the season with a 16-4 record, won the
ASC Tournament and regular-season titles and advanced to the NCAA
Tournament.
