Cowgirls Fall in Round of 32

LEXINGTON, Va. - Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team had its national title hopes dashed with a 2-1 loss to Virginia Wesleyan in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. on the campus of Washington and Lee University.

VWU got on the board first in the 21st minute when Julia Green headed in a Katie Barg corner kick. Barg then answered unassisted in the 47th minute to give Virginia Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.

The Cowgirls battled back and freshman Whitney Piendak scored on an assist from fellow freshman Calli Wood in the 80th minute. HSU had three shots at the net in the final 1:30 of the game but were unable to find the net.

Rachel Goold had seven saves in goal for the Cowgirls. Laura Wiederwax stopped all three HSU shots on goal.

Virginia Wesleyan improved to 19-2-2 on the year and will play Washington and Lee for the right to go to the Elite Eight. Washington and Lee defeated Greensboro College in penalty kicks to advance in the first game of the day. HSU concludes its stellar season with a 16-4 mark.
