Nov. 12, 2006
TACOMA, Wash. - Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team knocked off No. 1 Trinity, 2-1, to advance to the sectional finals Sunday afternoon in Tacoma, Wash. The Cowgirls scored with just :12 remaining in the first half when Whitney Piendak scored on a header off a Kelsey Jensen pass. It was the 30th goal of the season for Piendak. The Cowgirls out shot the Tigers 11-4 in the first half. In the second half, Trinity controlled most of the play early one, but Cowgirl freshman goalkeeper Christi Carr was up to the task. At the 75:35 mark, the Cowgirls were able to get on the board again when freshman Amy Kuykendall served it to freshman Jordan Morley and Morley hammered it home to make it 2-0. It was the 11th goal of the year for Morley. Trinity did not go away as they came right back with a goal at the 77:30 mark when Jasmine Martin scored off a rebound after Carr had made another great save. "It was two great teams out there today and we came out on top," said HSU head coach Marcus Wood. "It was a tough trip emotionally, flying out here, then playing a very good Puget Sound team followed by the No. 1 team in the country on consecutive days. It was cold and rainy, but our girls were able to block out all of the distractions and in the end just play soccer." "I though both teams played great. Lance (Key - Trinity head coach) did a great job with his team. I could not be prouder of our team. We have a special group of players and they deserve to still be playing, because they have earned it." Trinity won the shot battle 18-17 and HSU had more corners 8-4 in an evenly contested match. The Cowgirls improved to 18-0-4 on the year and will play UC-Santa Cruz in the next round at a site to be determined after the Wheaton (Ill.)/Macalester game on Monday. Trinity ended its year with a record of 16-1-2. --- HSU Athletics --- |
