Final Stats

TACOMA, Wash. - Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team battled Puget Sound to a 2-2 tie, but prevailed in penalty kicks (6-5) to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championships at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash.

Puget Sound jumped out to a 1-0 lead 5:30 into the game when Jenna Dwiggins scored for the Loggers. The lead did not last long as the Cowgirls' Mindi Zamora scored :13 seconds later on an assist from Amy Kuykendall.

Zamora struck again when she took a pass from senior teammate Whitney Piendak and chipped it in from the right side at the 55:18 mark. The Cowgirls almost made it hold up, but Kate Gillette scored on a header on a pass from Adrienne Folsom at the 88:29 mark.

HSU though they had won the game with :30 seconds remaining when Whitney Piendak drilled what everyone though was an indirect kick. The referee had ruled a direct kick, thus discounting the untouched ball.

After a pair of scoreless overtimes HSU won the game in penalty kicks, when freshman goalkeeper Christi Carr saved the final try by Abbie Ogaard. The Cowgirls received makes from Amy Kuykendall, Piendak, Ali Baker, Jordan Morley, Morgan Loyd and Marissa Wichkoski.

HSU improved to 17-0-4 on the year and Puget Sound ends its campaign at 15-1-4. HSU will play old rival and No. 1 Trinity in the second round on Sunday at 3 p.m. CST. The two teams tied in the season opener 2-2.
