Nov. 3, 2007
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' sixth-ranked women's soccer team will try for its fifth straight American Southwest Conference title as it advanced to the Championship with a 3-0 win over Mississippi College, Saturday afternoon at the HSU Soccer Complex. The Cowgirls will face UT-Tyler, which defeated UT-Dallas 1-0 in the other semifinal, on Sunday at 1 p.m. HSU was able to put the game away early with three goals in the first 22:39 of play. Morgan Loyd scored the first goal just 2:33 in when she finished off a shot on a beautiful sequence that had Erin Low send a ball to the corner, where Jessica Flobeck one-touched it to Loyd's foot. Carlyn Powers scored the second goal for the Cowgirls at the 22:11 mark off a direct kick from Flobeck. Just :28 later Cassie Sandifer finished off a Loyd pass. The Cowgirls were able to substitute liberally after that and should be well rested for the championship game. Christ Carr pitched the shutout in goal with six saves. HSU outshot MC 14-8 overall and 9-6 on-goal. HSU is 18-1 on the year and winners of 16 in a row. MC closes its season with a record of 13-6. UT-Tyler 1, UT-Dallas 0 Brenda Salinas put away a short scramble in front of the net off a feed from Taylor Estes to propel UT-Tyler to its first ASC final. The Patriots outshot UTD 11-7, but both teams had four shots on goal. UTD had seven corner kicks to two for UTT. Sam Fraser recorded the shutout in goal for UTT. The goal allowed by UTD was the first they had allowed, other than an own goal against HSU, in 15 games. UTT improved to 13-3-3 overall and UTD fell to 12-5-3. |
