Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team opened its season with a 3-0 victory over South region foe Southwestern in the season-opener for both teams, Wednesday afternoon at Shelton Stadium in Abilene.
The Cowgirls came out sluggish in the first half and the Priates took advantage with three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. Fortunately, senior goalkeeper Rachel Goold was up to the task as she had five saves in the first half.
In the second half the Cowgirls' defense did not allow a single shot by Southwestern and HSU outshot SU 12-0 in the second half and 19-5 overall.
Junior forward got the Cowgirls on the board in the 22nd minute with a goal on an assist from Mindi Zamora. One minute into the second half Zamora set-up newcomer Marissa Wichkoski on another goal.
Ellaine Pallerez scored the final goal of the game in the 74th minute off a Beth Craig assist.
HSU will face No. 9 Trinity at noon on Saturday in San Antonio.
