Cowgirls Place 11th at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - Hardin-Simmons' women's golf team shook off a first-round 360 with rounds of 336 and 339 to place 11th at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate on Sunday.

The 23-team tournament featured most of the top Division III teams in the event.

Kristi Martin led the Cowgirls with a seventh-place individual finish with rounds of 83-80-76 for a three-round total of 239. Her 76 tied for the third best round of the third round.

Whitney Mitchell had a strong tournament for the Cowgirls with three rounds in the 80's, shooting 88-82-85 for a 255 total. DeLane Griffith shot improved her score each round with scores of 92, 91 and 86. Chandra Hayes had a counting score all three days with a 97, 85 and 92. Lauren Schaub rounded out the Cowgirl lineup with a 99-89-96--284.

Berry College, the No. 7 team in the nation in NAIA won the tournament with a three-round scored of 947. St. Thomas, who is ranked No. 5, was the top Division III placer with a 956. HSU shot a 1035.

Amy Goble of Berry won the individual total with scores of 79-72-72 and she won the event by nine strokes. Martin was 16 strokes off the individual title.

The Cowgirls will now take three weeks off to prepare for the LeTourneau Spring Invitational on April 16-17 and then the ASC Championship the next week at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney.
