ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons has selected four former standouts to its Athletic Hall of Fame and they will be inducted into the Hall at a banquet on Oct. 19 in the Johnson Building as part of the HSU Homecoming festivities.
Julie Goodenough will be inducted after a successful run as the Cowgirl basketball coach. She went 188-54 in nine seasons with the Cowgirls and is the program's all-time winningest coach. She guided her last four teams to at least the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. She won seven ASC or TIAA conference titles.
Anthony Christian goes down as one of the top defensive lineman to ever play at HSU. He played three years at HSU, after one season at New Mexico Military where he was the league's defensive MVP. He was an All-American in 1994 and twice was named all-TIAA. He had 171 career tackles, including 27 for loss. His 15 career sacks rank him fourth all-time at HSU.
Two former tracksters will go into the Hall of Fame posthumously.
Jerold J.C. Smith played football, basketball and ran track for the Cowboys. He earned 12 varsity letters for the Cowboys. He played tackle and end in football, he was an all-conference guard in basketball. He competed in the shot put, discus and hurdles. He later came back to HSU and was an assistant football coach, while also coaching basketball and track He passed away in 1998.
Max Irwin ran track for the Cowboys from 1954-58. He was 32 medals and established school record in the 100, 200 and 440-yard dashes. He passed away in 1997.
