Dec. 1, 2007
ABILENE, Texas - There may be a lot of new faces on the Cowgirl basketball team, but the program is in good shape with its new faces as Hardin-Simmons rolled to a 79-49 win over LeTourneau in the American Southwest Conference opener for both schools Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex. The Cowgirls had a little rust from its 13-day layoff in the early going, but once they got it rolling they showed they are still as strong as ever. Newcomer Ashley Allen had her breakout game with the Cowgirls scoring 20 points in just 21 minutes of action. Seniors Rachel Cisneroz and Shelby Hodges each hit double figures with 17 and 10 points respectively. Mollie Brawner and Kristen Harris each had nine points. HSU led 36-25 at the half and after LeTourneau made the first basket of the second half, HSU went on an 18-4 run. Brawner had a 3-pointer and a jumper and Cisneroz had a pair of 3-pointers in the run. After that run the game was never in doubt and the Cowgirls continued to push the lead out to as many as 34 at 75-41. LeTourneau shot just 28 percent in the game and was led by Ashley Shepherd's 11 points off the bench. HSU will host East Texas Baptist on Monday at the Mabee Complex at 5:30 p.m. . --- HSU --- |
