RICHARDSON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball took its third straight game down to the wire and once again it was a late game surge that propelled the Cowgirls to an 81-72 American Southwest Conference win over UT-Dallas, Monday night at the UTD Activity Center in Richardson. The Cowgirls led by as many as 13 points in the first half and led 40-28 at halftime, but the Comets came out of the locker room on fire and hit the Cowgirls with a 14-3 run that cut the lead to 43-42 at the 15:20 mark. HSU once again pushed the lead back to 54-47 on Melissa Henley jumper at the 11:42 mark. The game continued back and forth and the Comets finally took a 69-66 lead with 3:17 remaining. HSU then responded with a 16-6 run at the end of the game to take the game. The Cowgirls were 13-of-15 at the free throw line in the last 2:36 as the Comets fouled to extend the game. Shelby Hodges had a career night for HSU with 23 points. She hit three 3-pointers and was 12-for-14 at the free throw line. Melissa Henley added 17 for HSU and Sonya West had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Concordia transfer Danielle Barnett continued her strong play against the Cowgirls with 18 points. Jennifer Longoria added 12 points. HSU is now 3-0 on the year and 2-0 in ASC play. The Comets fell to 0-3, 0-2. HSU will return home for a Thursday game with East Texas Baptist. |
