ABILENE, Texas - Preseason National Player of the Year Kendra Anderson played liked the award fits as she had 21 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals to lead the Cowgirls to a 69-56 win over Trinity University, Saturday night in the final game of the Cowgirl Classic at the Mabee Complex.

The Cowgirls only trailed early at 4-0 , but took the lead at 5-4 at the 14:22 mark and never trailed again in a physical contest with the Tigers.

A 3-pointer by Lauren Harris begin a Cowgirl run that saw Harris and Anderson score 16 straight points for the Cowgirls to take the lead from five to 11 with a minute to go. Harris hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 of her 16 points in the final five minutes of the game.

Harris had all 16 of her points in the second half. Sophomore point guard Diana Martinez sparked the Cowgirl offense in the first half with 12 of her career-high 16 points.

Senior Laura Ricci had a great defensive game with 11 rebounds and limited Trinity's best player Tara Rohde to eight points. Trinity was led by Melissa Carl's 15 points.

The Cowgirl pressure defense forced 29 turnovers by the Tigers and led to 29 points off of turnovers. The win was big for the Cowgirls, who beat a team that is expected to contend for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title. The win could prove beneficial for home court advantage if the Cowgirls were to make the playoffs, with Trinity being one of the better teams in the region.

"This was another tough game," said Shanna Briggs. "We expected a physical game and it definitely was. We got performances down the stretch from the players we expect to be our go-to players in Kendra and Lauren. Laura Ricci was big on the defensive end for us and Diana had a great game. We have to continue to work to get better. It is early in the season."

Mary Hardin-Baylor defeated Southwestern, 80-70, in the first game of the day. Jennifer Gilchriest led the Crusaders with 16 points. The win gave the ASC teams three wins in four game over the SCAC teams in the tournament.

HSU (2-0) returns to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday when they travel to Odessa to take on UT-Permian Basin.
