Cowgirls Fall To Southwestern in Overtime

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Playing without two of its top players, Hardin-Simmons dropped a 66-64 overtime game on the road at Southwestern on Tuesday night in non-conference women's basketball action.

The Cowgirls led 47-38 after a Mollie Brawner jumper with 6:03 to play, but Southwestern went on a 10-2 run to cut the Cowgirl lead to 49-48 with 2:53 to play. Sarah Hauk hit a 3-pointer to make it 52-48 with 2:32 to play.

Natasha Azizi hit a pair of free throws to cap a five-point Pirate run and give Southwestern their first lead of the game with :47 to play. After both teams had turnovers and missed free throws down the stretch and could not score Hauk was fouled at the buzzer and she made one of two free throws to tie the game at 53-53.

Southwestern took a 64-58 lead, before HSU stormed back with a free throw by Laci Walker, a Rachel Cisneroz 3-pointer and a Hauk steal and lay-up to tie the game with six seconds to play. Southwestern then got fouled with 00.7 seconds to play on a 3-point attempt. Priyanka Kainthla hit the first two and gave the Pirates the win.

Lyssa Dennard, played only eight minutes with an illness and starting post Jeni Hobbs did not play with a back injury. HSU also had its two starting post players foul our in Melissa Contrucci and Shelby Hodges.

Walker led the Cowgirls with 15 points, Contrucci added 14 and Cisneroz had 10. Kendal George led Southwestern with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

HSU is 1-1 on the year and Southwestern improved to 2-1. HSU will play at East Texas Baptist on Saturday in the conference opener.
