Nov. 21, 2003 SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball opened its season with a 66-50 loss to No. 2 Trinity, Friday evening at the Sams Gym in Trinity. The Cowgirls got behind early in the first half when the Tigers went on a 17-0 run and held the Cowgirls scoreless for over seven minutes. The young Cowgirls held their own with the exception of that run. The Cowgirls won the second half score 30-28. Lauren Harris led the Cowgirls with 18 points and seven rebounds and Veronica Jones and Kandice Williams had nine and eight points respectively. Harris canned four 3-pointers in the contest. Tara Rohde and Jennifer Farrar had 10 points each to pace the balanced Tigers. The Cowgirls got significant minutes from its bench and several showed flashes of brilliance, including newcomers Williams, Melissa Forth, Lyssa Dennard, Magna Green and Melissa Henley. Trinity lost to HSU in the first weekend of the year last year and returned the favor to the Cowgirls in the playoffs. HSU will look for a similar effort this season as the team gels with new players on the floor. Hardin-Simmons will face Southwest Assemblies of God on Tuesday in its home opener at 6 p.m. |
