STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball saw its magical season come to an end with a 72-67 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Saturday night in the NCAA Championship Sectional finals. The Cowgirls held a five-point halftime lead, but fell behind 10 points with 6:41 remaining, before coming back to tie the game on a Lauren Harris lay-up with 1:59 left. Hardin-Simmons had the ball down low with the game tied with :55 seconds to go and Melissa Henley missed a shot through contact and HSU was called for two traveling violations in the final minute. UW-Stevens Point scored their last five points on free throws as the Pointers shot 33 free throws in the game, compared to 16 by the Cowgirls, including 25-8 in the second half. HSU forced the Pointers into 29 turnovers and shot 38 more shots than UWSP, but were unable to adjust to making shots through contact. HSU's top two scorers Harris and Diana Martinez combined to go 9-for-25 from the field. The Cowgirls were led by 18 from Harris and freshman Lyssa Dennard had 10 off the bench. Magna Green and Keila Remmele added nine points each, but both fouled out. Remmele went out at the 8:13 mark and Green was eliminated at the 5:26 mark. Andrea Kramer led the Pointers with a career-best 26 points. Cassandra Schultz added 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. UWSP advances to the NCAA Division III Final Four. HSU ends its season with a 27-3 mark. |
