Feb. 27, 2004 CLINTON, Miss. - Hardin-Simmons' 10th-ranked women's basketball team advanced to their sixth straight American Southwest Conference Tournament final with a hard fought 71-64 win over Austin College, Friday night in Clinton, Miss. Diana Martinez took the game over down the stretch for the Cowgirls, scoring 15 points in the final 7:35 of the game. She had a career-best 24 points in the contest. HSU trailed 56-52 with 4:30 to go when Martinez hit a jumper in the paint and then made a steal and a lay-up five seconds later. HSU's defense took over down the stretch as the Cowgirls overcame a nine-point deficit (40-31 at the 13:00 mark). HSU led by as many as nine in the first half. Four Cowgirls were in double figures. Veronica Jones had 15, Magna Green added 11 and Melissa Henley chipped in 10 before fouling out. Leading scorer Lauren Harris was held to five points. Valencia Johnson led the Kangaroos with 18 points. HSU improved to 24-2 and Austin College finished its campaign at 18-8. The Cowgirls will play Howard Payne on Saturday for the title. HSU is going for its sixth straight title. The two teams split a pair of games in the regular season.. Howard Payne beat tournament host Mississippi College in the first semifinal, 52-49. |
