Cowgirls Advance in ASC Tournament

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons moved to 13-0 all-time in the American Southwest Conference Tournament with a 104-50 win over East Texas Baptist in the quarterfinals, Friday night at the Mabee Complex in Abilene.

The Cowgirls scored early and often and its starters came out early in the second half as the bench continued the onslaught. HSU has 70 bench points in the game, including a career-best 15 by Lindsay Thompson on five 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Lyssa Dennard went down with an ankle injury :12 into the game and did not return.

Nine Cowgirls had eight or more points in the game as HSU shot 55 percent for the game and hit 11 3-pointers. ETBU struggled to 27 percent for the game. Marzetta Sheppard scored 14 points to lead the Tigers.

HSU went on a 40-8 run to close the first half. With the win the Cowgirls improved to 22-3 on the year. East Texas Baptist closes its campaign at 10-16. HSU will play the winner of McMurry and Louisiana College in the semifinals at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

NOTES The 54-point win by the Cowgirls is the most lopsided win in the ASC Women's Basketball Tournament. HSU and East Texas Baptist were also the teams involved in the closest game of the conference playoffs, a 59-58 first-round Cowgirls win in 2000 - five years to the date of this year's blowout. . . . Hardin-Simmons extended its string of ASC Tournament wins to 13 (13-0) over its seven postseason appearances. . . . East Texas Baptist slips to 0-3 all-time in the ASC Tournament.
