Cowgirls Win in Alpine

Alpine, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team held off Sul Ross State, 70-65, in American Southwest Conference action Saturday afternoon in Alpine.

The Cowgirls led 63-50 at the 6:57 mark when Lindsay Thompson hit a follow shot. However, the Lobos battled back and cut it to 68-64 with an 18-5 run late in the game.

HSU had a balanced attack with Diana Martinez leading the way with 18 points. Lyssa Dennard scored 11 of her 13 in the second half and Melissa Henley and Shelby Hodges scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

Sul Ross State was led by freshman Angelique Benton's 12 points Danielle Furr and Soli Quintanilla added 10 each.

The Cowgirls improved to 19-3 overall and 16-3 in league play and remain in first place in the league with Howard Payne. Sul Ross State fell to 3-19 overall and 3-17 in ASC play. HSU closes its regular season next week with home games against Concordia-Austin and Mary Hardin-Baylor.
