BROWNWOOD, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team fell victim to a cold shooting night in a 68-50 loss to Howard Payne, Thursday evening in American Southwest Conference action at the Brownwood Coliseum. The Cowgirls shot just 26 percent from the field in the game and were just 20 percent in the first half, enabling the Lady Jackets to jump out to a 32-22 halftime lead. HPU got the lead up to 18, before the Cowgirls cut it to nine points late in the contest, but could get no closer. Diana Martinez led the Cowgirls with 13 points and Melissa Henley added 12. Kami Collins led the Howard Payne effort with 17 points and 17 rebounds. The game, coupled with a McMurry win over Sul Ross State, made it a three-way tie in the ASC West race. HSU is 18-3 overall and 15-3 in league play. HPU improved to 19-3 and 15-3 in conference. With three games remaining the race to host the ASC Tournament is down to the wire. Howard Payne and McMurry will play on Saturday. HSU would need to win at Sul Ross State to match the winner of the game for first place. |
