ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team won its 44th straight game at home against an American Southwest Conference foe with a convincing 80-65 win over cross-town rival McMurry, Tuesday evening in front of 1,655 fans at the Mabee Complex in Abilene, Texas. McMurry took a 56-52 lead at the on a Dee Dee Burton jumper at the 7:49 minute mark, but Hardin-Simmons responded with a 24-4 run over the next 6:14 to take control of the game and win their 11th straight against the Indians. In the decisive run Keila Remmele run hit a lay-up and a 3-pointer, Diana Martinez hit a pair of 3-pointers and a short jumper, McMurry transfer Melissa Forth hit three jumpers, Lauren Harris hit a 3-pointer and freshman Melissa Henley hit a lay-up on a nifty pass from Martinez. HSU was 10-of-12 in the run. Martinez, a junior guard from Comanche, was the difference in the game. She finished the game with the first triple-double in school history with 20 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. Forth had 11 points, and seniors Lauren Harris and Veronica Jones added 17 and 11 points respectively to finish their careers undefeated against the Indians. Sonya West and Carli Engelke had 18 points each to pace the Indians. Sonya West had 16 in the first half on 7-of-8 shooting, but Keila Remmele limited her to one shot attempt in the second half. Lauren Harris did a good cover job on Brittany Densman, a transfer from Hardin-Simmons. She came in as the second leading scorer on the team, but had more turnovers (6) than points (5) and was just 2-of-7 from the field. Hardin-Simmons remained in first place in the ASC West moving to 7-1 in conference and 17-2 overall. McMurry fell to 12-7 overall and 3-5 in league play. |
