Cowgirls Fall at Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Sixth-ranked Howard Payne became the first time in the American Southwest Conference era to sweep a regular-season series from Hardin-Simmons as the Lady Jackets won 67-57 Thursday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The game was back and forth the first 12 minutes, before Howard Payne went on a 9-0 run to make it 30-21 with 5:16 to play in the first half. HPU pushed it to 36-26 at halftime and led by 12 at 43-31 with 17:39 to play. HSU then went on a 12-1 run to cut it to 44-43 with 12:03 to play.

Howard Payne responded with a 11-2 run to make it 55-45 and HSU would never get closer than six points the rest of the game.

Jeni Hobbs led the Cowgirls with 15 points and Laci Walker and Melissa Contrucci each added 12 points for the Cowgirls.

Meia Daniels led the Lady Jackets with 16 points and Hope Hohertz added 10 points off the bench.

Howard Payne improved to 19-1 on the year and 15-1 in ASC play. HSU fell to 15-4 overall and 13-3 in league action. HSU plays at Sul Ross State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
