Jan. 22, 2004 ALPINE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team won its 14th straight game overall and 38th straight against American Southwest Conference foes as they ran past Sul Ross State 85-63, Thursday night in Alpine. The win moved the 12th-ranked Cowgirls to 14-1 on the season and to 4-0 in ASC West play. SRSU fell to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Sul Ross State cut the Cowgirls lead to nine points late in the first half and their All-American candidate April Ramirez went out of the game with a shoulder injury. The Lobos never responded as Lauren Harris hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer and the Cowgirls took a 43-31 lead into the locker room. A quick 8-0 run to start the second half pushed the Cowgirls lead to 20 and the starters came out. HSU played most of the second half with its five freshmen on the floor. Harris led the Cowgirls with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 5-for-5 from behind the 3-point arc. Freshman Melissa Henley added 18 points and Diana Martinez added 12. India Franco led the Lady Lobos with 20 points. HSU plays at Howard Payne on Saturday at 1 p.m. The games will be on KAGT 90.5 FM and at www.hsuathletics.com. |
