Cowboys Defeat UMHB In Last Home Game Of The Season

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 5-2 in American Southwest Conference Saturday at Shelton Stadium.

Junior Matt Leach led the team with two goals scored within the first two minutes of the last home game for the Cowboys. Sophomore Kyle Rampy and sophomore Chris Carroll added assists on Leach's first goal. Sophomore Calvin Key, sophomore Trevor Elza and Carroll all scored one goals each.

Sophomore Justin Spangler led UMHB with two goals scored off penalty kicks.

HSU moves to 6-2-1 in ASC play and 10-5-1 overall and UMHB drops to (3-9-1, 2-6).

It was Senior Day here at Shelton Stadium as two Cowboys played in their last game of their career. First is Scott Ballard a four-year letterman from Paris. He is a two-year starter and has played defender, midfield and forward in his career. Scott will play in his 74th game today and he has 6 goals and 12 assists in his career. He has led the Cowboys to three straight American Southwest Conference tournaments and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Scott will be a three-time Academic All-ASC performer.

Finally, there is senior goalkeeper Chuck Johnson. He is a two-year starter at goalkeeper from Leander. Chuck will play in his 40th game today and has nine shutouts and 146 saves in his career. He was named two-time ASC West Defensive Player of the Week in 2001.

In their careers they have posted a 52-20-2 record and have won three ASC titles and participated in two NCAA Championships.

The Cowboys will return to action on Saturday, November 2nd when they take on cross-town rival McMurry in ASC action at 2 p.m.
