Oct. 22, 2005
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team had a come from behind 2-1 win against the Mississippi College Choctaws on Saturday afternoon at the HSU Soccer Complex. The win kept the Cowboys in a fight to host the ASC Tournament. The Cowboys fell behind early in the first half when Choctaw forward Matt Cox knocked one pass Ryan Shaughnessy, the HSU goalkeeper, in the 17th minute mark on an assist from Drew Ziegler. Like they have done all season when trailing, the Cowboys picked up the intensity and had several scoring chances late in the first half and it carried over to the second half. The Cowboys outshot the Choctaws 9-2 in the second half but no shot was more important than when the Cowboys received a penalty kick from an aggressive play from Nick Sager. Sager was knocked down in front of the net while he was trying to head a crosser. Junior forward David Salas took the penalty kick and tied the game at 1-1 with a little over four minutes remaining in the match. In the first overtime, the Cowboys aggressive play continued and received a corner kick. Drew Meilinger took the corner and fed it perfect in front of the net where Salas jumped above the defender and headed it pass the goalkeeper for the winning score. The win improved Hardin-Simmons record to 10-4-2 and 8-3-1 in ASC action while Mississippi College fell to 4-8-1 and 2-7-0 in conference play. The Cowboys will return to action on Saturday, October 29 when they host their crosstown rival McMurry in the regular-season finale. |
