Sept. 17, 2004 ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team opened its conference season with a 5-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, Friday night at Shelton Stadium. Mary Hardin-Baylor jumped out to an early lead when Justin Gaffney scored in the third minute of the game off a rebound. The game remained that way until the 43rd minute, when the Cowboys' Bentley Martin scored off a Chris Caroll corner kick. The Cowboys came out in the second half and scored two minutes in when Trevor Elza scored on a Calvin Key assist. In the 72nd minute Kris Noel scored on a nifty play where Trevor Elza headed it to Drew Meilinger who one-touched it over to Noel. Daniel Arnold added a goal in the 80th minute when he stole the ball in the open field and took it in one-on-one. David Salas scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. HSU improved to 2-2-1 on the year and 1-0-0 in ASC play. UMHB fell to 1-3-0, 0-1-0. The Cowboys will host Concordia-Austin at 4 p.m. on Saturday. |
