ABILENE, Texas - James Burton's goal in the second half sent Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over McMurry in its American Southwest Conference opener Tuesday night at Shelton Stadium.

Burton, a sophomore forward for the Cowboys, scored the only goal in the game on an assist from Scott Ballard in the 86th minute of the game.

"This was a great cross-town rivalry game," said HSU head coach Kevin Wardlaw. "Both teams played hard to the end and it was a emotional war out there. We are pleased to get this result. Any win against one of the better teams in the ASC West will help us get to postseason.

Burton, Chris Carroll, and Adrian Romero each led the team with two shots. Senior goalkeeper Chuck Johnson had four saves in 90 minutes of shutout action.

HSU moves to 1-0 in ASC play and 4-3 overall. McMurry drops to 0-1 in conference and 4-1-1 overall.

The Cowboys will return to action when they host Austin College Thursday, September 26 starting at 8 p.m. at Shelton Stadium.
