Sept. 15, 2006
SEGUIN, Texas - Senior defender Ricky Matthies scored a rare goal off a Texas Lutheran turnover to give Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team a 3-2 road win in the American Southwest Conference opener at Texas Lutheran on Friday afternoon. Matthies, who has been a four-year contributor on the Cowboys' defensive backline and was playing in his 56th career game, scored just his second career goal and the first since his freshman season. The Cowboys jumped out to an early advantage, when senior Nick Sager scored in the fifth minute on an assist from freshman Jorge Vega. Texas Lutheran took the lead with goals in the 27th and 30th minutes by Alan Garza on a free kick and Brad Sparks. Ryan Flanigan, who has missed the last two weeks with an injury, tied the game for the Cowboys in the 76th minute off a Colt McKee assist. The Cowboys have won three straight games to move its record to 3-2. They are 1-0 in the defense of their ASC title from 2005. Texas Lutheran fell to 2-2-1 and 0-1-0 on the year. HSU will play at Schreiner on Saturday. |
