SEWANEE, Tenn. -
Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team pitched a shutout and David Salas had a pair of goals to lead the Cowboys to the title of the Kyle Rote Invitational title with a 2-0 win over Piedmont, Sunday afternoon in Sewanee, Tenn.
Salas hit for goals in the 70th and 82nd minutes. Daniel Arnold had the first assist and the second went unassisted. The shutout gave the Cowboys the team title in the three-team invitational by virtue of allowing the fewest goals.
The University of the South had defeated Piedmont 2-1 on Friday and HSU and U of S tied on Saturday 2-2. Piedmont was an NCAA Tournament team a year ago.
Ryan Shaughnessy was solid in goal knocking back six shots in the game. The Cowboys were out shot 12-6, but made the most of the opportunities they had. Shaughnessy was named defensive MVP of the Tournament, while Salas earned offensive MVP accolades. Defenders Chris Carroll and Ricky Matthies also were named to the All-Tournament team.
HSU (1-0-1) will play at top-ranked Trinity on Sept. 11 in its next action.
