McMurry Holds Off TLU By One Stoke; HSU Finished Fourth

ASC Champions

April 20, 2004

Final Stats

ABILENE, Texas - McMurry's men's golf team opened a 10-shot lead after the first 36 holes of the American Southwest Conference Championship on Monday and they were able to hold on to the lead by one stroke over Texas Lutheran, Tuesday at the Diamondback Golf Course in Abilene.

McMurry shot 293-299-319 to finish with a 911 and Texas Lutheran shot 304-298-310 for a 912. LeTourneau finished third with a 921. Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin-Baylor tied for fourth with a 923. The Cowboys fired the low round of the day with a 301, but dug a 30-stroke deficit after the first day.

Sean Sciba of UT-Tyler won the men's individual title with a 76-71-74 -- 221. Doug Moorehead of LeTourneau was second with a 222, Todd Anderson of Mary Hardin-Baylor was third at 224 and HSU senior Chris Phillips was fourth with a 225. Those four were joined by Michael Faterkowski (TLU), Rode McElreath (McMurry) and Josh Weland (TLU) on the first-team All-ASC team.

Jeff Williams (Concordia-Austin), Clint Wellhausen (HSU), Alex Seydler (TLU) and Aaron Shipley (HSU) were named to the second-team All-ASC squad. Shipley fired the low round of the day with a one-over 72.

Phillips, Wellhausen and Shipley all placed in the top 10 for the Cowboys. Ryan Salinas (243) and Paul Schaub (249) rounded out the Cowboy lineup.

The top five teams will all wait word from the selection committee. Texas Lutheran, Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin-Baylor have been the most consistent teams of the group on the year and likely only one team from the ASC will make it into the NCAA Championships. There is no automatic bid for the ASC champion.
