April 6, 2004
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team finished in third place and Chris Phillips won medalist honors at the rain-shortened District VI Tournament at the Teravista Golf Club in Round Rock on Monday. Tuesday's third round was washed out by the wet weather. The Cowboys third-place finish came on the heels of a third-place effort at the Kingsmen's Invitational in California two weeks ago. Both tournaments featured the best teams in the West region and the top three teams from the West at the end of the season will advance to the NCAA Championships. Texas Lutheran won the District VI Tournament with a two-round 596. The Bulldogs shot 298's in both rounds on Monday. La Verne (Calif.) finished second with a 305-297-602 and HSU shot a 304-302-606. California Lutheran (610), LeTourneau (613) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (613) rounded out the top five. Phillips fired a 71-72 for a one-under par 143 to take the individual title over Christian Colunga of California Lutheran. Bryan Levrets tied for 11th place in his first start of the spring for the Cowboys. He fired rounds of 74-77-151. Clint Wellhausen (80-77-157), Aaron Shipley (82-76-158) and Ryan Salinas (79-80-159) rounded out the Cowboy lineup. HSU is off until it co-hosts the conference tournament April 19-20 at Diamondback Golf Course. |
