Cowboys Rout McMurry

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons went into the game with crosstown rival McMurry, looking to continue its late season momentum, the mission was accomplished as the Cowboys put a 71-56 thumping on McMurry in the season finale at Wilford Moore Stadium.

With the win. the Cowboys retained the Wilford Moore Trophy that is given to the winner of the game. Moore is a member of both schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

Once again the Cowboys offense was near unstoppable. The Cowboys did whatever they wanted rolling up 71 points. The 127 points combined by the two schools were the most ever in an HSU game.

The game took four hours to play and the third quarter alone last an hour and 25 minutes. The two teams combined for 1,107 yards of total offense and also combined for 23 penalties for 245 yards.

HSU took an early lead when Mychal Carrillo scored on a 44 yard pass from Justin Feaster on the game's opening possession. Colt Williamson followed with a 27-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

Tristan Randle put McMurry on the board with a 2-yard run and HSU came right back on the next play with Quinton Jones scoring from 62 yards out. After one quarter, the Cowboys led 17-6.

McMurry came back with a Dusty Thornhill touchdown reception from Rashon Lewis. Feaster capped the Cowboys next drive with a 6-yard touchdown run and HSU led 24-13. McMurry scored on a Randle 14-yard run with :56 to play in the half, but HSU went 67 yards and scored on a Justice Baker 24 yard touchdown reception from Feaster with :18 to play in the half, making the score 31-21.

Williamson hit his second field goal of the game a 29-yarder with 8:49 to start a wild next 4:18. Lewis scored on an 18-yard run, but a celebration penalty put McMurry kicking off from the 16 into the wind. HSU took the short field and scored on a Jones 13-yard run. McMurry came right back and scored :19 later on a Randle 52-yard run.

McMurry then kicked the ball out of bounds twice, kicking away from ZaVious Robbins. Robbins took the third kick made a move left and went 67 yards for a touchdown on the kickoff return, his second return touchdown in as many games. After a David Joseph interception, HSU scored on a 20 yard pass play from Feaster to Baker, making it 56-34 to play with 4:31 to play in the third quarter.

HSU made it 63-34 when Jones went up the middle untouched for a 43-yard touchdown. Chris Sanders came back with a touchdown for McMurry and then Feaster hit Carrillo on a screen pass that went 42 yards for a touchdown. It gave Carrillo 14 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the game. It also gave him 1,043 yards for the season and made the score 71-40.

McMurry added two late touchdowns and 2-point conversions to set up the final score.

Feaster completed 21-of-29 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns. Jones ran for 190 yards on 22 carries with three touchdowns.

HSU finished its season with a record of 6-4, making it 16 straight years with a winning record. HSU finished tied with Mississippi College for second in the ASC with a 6-2 mark. McMurry closed the first season under Donny Gray at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in league play.
