Nov. 8, 2003 ABILENE, Texas - Lance Moore had 272 yards of offense with three touchdowns as Hardin-Simmons rolled past McMurry 43-21 to win the Wilford Moore Trophy for the sixth straight season Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference football action at Indian Stadium. The two teams traded scores on each team's first possession. Jordan Neuman scored on a 17-yard run with 10:43 to go in the first quarter. Moore countered with a 3-yard run that capped a 9-play, 67-yard drive. Moore carried five times for 59 yards. Each team traded punts on their next possessions and followed that with touchdowns. Chris Sanders gave McMurry a 14-7 lead with 1:19 to go in the first quarter with a 15-yard run. Moore then scored on a 21-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game. Moore struck again with 6:41 to go in the first half, this time from two-yards out. A high-snap caused a missed PAT making the score 20-14. HSU came out and dominated the third quarter 23-7 and neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Triandos Sherrard scored the first HSU touchdown 14-yards from Jordan Neal. Eric Davis scored on a 62-yard pass from Jordan Neuman when a Cowboy defender slipped and fell on the wet field. Joe Lemberg hit a 29-yard field goal making it 31-21 with 9:20 to go in the quarter. Neal scored on a 1-yard run and Matt Moskosky had a 34-yard touchdown on a deflection from Neal, to set up the final margin with :24 to go in the third quarter. HSU finished with 568 yards of total offense in the game, including 320 yards on the ground. Moore had 232 yards on 25 carries and caught two passes for 44 yards. Matt Moskosky led the team with five catches for 83 yards. Brent Gailey led the Cowboy defense with 13 tackles, including five for loss. HSU improved to 7-2 on the season and 6-1 in ASC play. The Cowboys are in a three-way tie for first-place in the American Southwest Conference. They would need a win by McMurry at Mary Hardin-Baylor to receive the automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. The Cowboys will close its regular-season with a game against Austin College, Saturday at Shelton Stadium. |
