ABILENE, Texas - Sul Ross State tied the game at 14-14 with 13:47 to go in the first half, after that it was all Hardin-Simmons as the Cowboys scored 42 unanswered points in a 56-14 Homecoming game rout of the Lobos, Saturday afternoon in front of 3,567 fans at Shelton Stadium. Both teams came into the game with 5-1 records and Sul Ross State was riding its first four-game winning streak since 1982. HSU took sole possession of second-place in the American Southwest Conference with a 4-1 record in league play. SRSU fell to 4-2 in league play. Joe Quise Brown scored the first touchdown of the game when he took an Austin Davidson pass and had no player within 20 yards of him on a busted coverage. He went 69 yards for the score Mike Van Wagner's PAT made it 7-0. HSU responded by driving eight plays and 72 yards for a touchdown. Justin Greene did the honors from 1-yard out and Scott Bryant's PAT tied the game. The Cowboys forced a punt and Will Galusha took the short punt to the Lobo 38-yard line and scored two plates later on a 39 yard touchdown run. Sul Ross State answered with a T.J. Barber 9-yard touchdown run to tie that game at the 13:47 mark of the first half. HSU then went 77 yards in eight plays with Jordan Neal capping it with a 1-yard run. Hsu then forced a quick three and out and HSU went 60 yards in four plays for another score to make it 28-14. Neal found a streaking Matt Fields and placed the ball just over Fields and the defenders' shoulder for a 33-yard TD pass. Hsu went seven plays and 75 yards on its final drive of the half and Quinton Jones capped the drive with a 1-yard run. The Cowboys' forced a Lobo punt and then went seven plays and 59 yards for a touchdown. Neal found Will Galusha on a 13-yard pass for the score. The Cowboys' first team offense came out after the first series in the second half. Justin Green and Justin Feaster each added touchdowns for the Cowboys to make the score 56-14. HSU rolled up 520 yards of total offense and averaged 8.1 yards per play. The Cowboys converted 5-of-7 third-downs in the game. SRSU was just 1-of-13 on third down. The Lobos were hampered when Austin Davidson left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. The Cowboys will travel to Seguin for a noon game against the Bulldogs next weekend. |
