Oct. 25, 2003 ABILENE, Texas - Lance Moore rushed for 158 yards and scored a touchdown in overtime to give Hardin-Simmons a 20-14 win over East Texas Baptist in American Southwest Conference football action in front of a packed homecoming crowd of 3,717 at Shelton Stadium in Abilene. Moore outstaged the ASC's leading-running back RoShawn Johnson, who ran for 131 yards on 35 carries. Moore did his damage on just 16 carries. The Cowboys jumped out to a 14-0 first half lead with a pair of touchdowns by Jared May. His 6-yard run capped a 4-play, 27-yard drive in the first quarter to give the Cowboys a 7-0 lead with 5:52 to go in the first. He then scored on a 19-yard pass from Jordan Neal with 5:51 to go in the half to set up the halftime score. Jabori Jackson scored on a 6-yard pass from Brandon Nelson to cut the Cowboy lead to 14-7 with 9:28 to go in the third quarter. East Texas Baptist rounded out the regulation scoring with a six-yard touchdown pass to Earl Morris with 1:10 to go. HSU was driving inside a minute when Neal was picked off and the game went into overtime. East Texas Baptist got the ball first in overtime and tried a Sean Struwe 26-yard field goal that was blocked by the Cowboys' Reggie Robinson. Moore took the Cowboys' first play in overtime 22 yards up the middle and scored two plays later. Neal completed 16 of 24 passes for 216 yards and a score. Nelson was 10-for-26 with two touchdowns and an interception. May led the Cowboy receiving corps with six catches for 80 yards. Jackson had five catches for 71 yards for the Tigers. Anthony Renfro and Jason Rupert led a strong defensive contingent with 11 tackles each. The Cowboys limited ETBU to 247 yards of total offense. The Cowboys improved to 6-1 overall and 6-0 in ASC play. ETBU fell to 5-2, 5-1. The Cowboys will host Mary Hardin-Baylor for the conference championship for the fourth straight season next week at Shelton Stadium. The Crusaders are 7-0 overall and 6-0 in ASC play. |
