Cowboys Tame Tigers, 38-13

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' defense dominated the game and the offense was once again solid as the Cowboys moved into sole possession of first place in the American Southwest Conference with a 38-13 win over East Texas Baptist Saturday at Shelton Stadium in Abilene.

For the fourth straight game Jordy Bernhard hit Jared May on a touchdown pass for the first score of the game. This time it was from 21 yards out and capped a 10-play, 77-yard drive to open the game. ETBU came right back with a 49-yard field goal

HSU made it 14-3 on the next series as the Cowboys went four plays in 63 yards. Bernhard found Brad Clark on a screen pass and he sprinted down the sideline for a 23-yard score. ETBU scored on the next ETBU series on a 44-yard field goal to make it 14-6.

The Cowboys would have had a sizeable lead in the first half, but were 0-for-3 in red-zone conversions. The Cowboys fumbled once, missed a field goal and were stopped on a quarterback sneak at the goal line and the lead stayed at 14-6 at halftime.

HSU came out in the second half and forced a three and out and drove down, but had to settle for a Shane McCord field goal to make it 17-6.

Quinton Jones then scored back-to-back touchdowns on the next two series scoring on 2 and 1-yard runs. Jones had missed the better part of four games with an ankle injury but had a solid day in a reserve role with seven carries for 56 yards and two TDs. His second TD made it 31-6 with 4:33 to go in the third quarter.

Jason Gray got the Tigers into the end zone for the only time in the game on a 30-yard pass from Antroin Broom in the corner of the end zone. Thurston Ashley scored on a 1-yard run at the 7:24 mark of the game to make it 38-13 and set up the final score.

The Cowboys had 478 yards of offense in the game and limited the Tigers to 190 yards and only 3.0 yards per play. Jordy Bernhard completed 21-of-28 passes for 242 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Cowboys.

The defense was led by Rob Galusha's 10 tackles. Derek Lewis had three tackles for loss and two sacks. The Cowboys had four sacks in the game.

With the win, the Cowboys improved to 6-0 on the year and 5-0 in ASC play. East Texas Baptist fell to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Cowboys host Mary Hardin-Baylor in a rematch of an NCAA playoff game from a year ago on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m.
