Cowboys Move to 5-0

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' football team continued its offensive onslaught as they rolled up 535 yards en route to a 38-13 American Southwest Conference win over Sul Ross State, Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium in Abilene.

The Cowboys dominated the action when the first team was in the game. HSU led 38-7, two possessions into the third quarter. The Cowboys took out its starters at that point.

Jordan Neal had his best game of the season completing 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns. After a Will Galusha interception, his fourth of the season, the Cowboys took their first possession and went 17 plays and 79 yards in 7:07 for a touchdown. Neal found Triandos Sherrard on a 9-yard inside pitch, the snap on the PAT was low and HSU was unable to get the kick off.

Shane McCord added a 30-yard field goal late in the first to make it 9-0 after one quarter. Donta' Hayward and Lance Moore had touchdowns on the Cowboys next three possessions. Hayward scored on a 7-yard run with 11:42 to go in the third. Moore then scored on a 22 yard run and caught a screen pass and went 21 yards for a score.

Sul Ross State got on the board with :21 to go in the half when Gilbert Almanza scored on a 52-yard pass when HSU defensive backs Will Galusha and Travis Craver collided on an interception attempt. Almanza took the deflection to the end zone.

The Cowboys last score came in the third quarter when Moore scored on a 22-yard pass from Neal. Moore finished the day with 65 yards rushing on just 12 carries and also caught three passes for 55 yards. Nivek Hatcher and Robert Galusha had eight tackles each to lead the Cowboy defense. Eric Shults had three tackles for loss, including two sacks.

Sul Ross State added its final score late in the fourth quarter when Austin Davidson hit Chris Speed on a 61-yard pass.

HSU improved to 5-0 on the year and 4-0 in ASC action. Sul Ross State fell to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in ASC play. HSU plays at East Texas Baptist at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
