Cowboys Down Lobos, 42-27

ALPINE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' football team moved to 5-0 on the year with a 42-27 win at Sul Ross State, Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field in Alpine.

Jordy Bernhard ran for two touchdowns and three for three more as the Cowboys moved the ball effectively against the Lobos.

After the defense forced a three-and-out by the Lobos on the first drive of the game, Jared May put the Cowboys on the board on HSU's first drive when he took a shovel pass 10 yards from Bernhard to the endzone. HSU forced another three-and out on the next series and drove 52 yards for a score, with Bernhard scoring with a quarterback sneak to make it 14-0 at the 5:27 mark of the first quarter.

Sul Ross scored the first touchdown of the season in the first quarter when Steven Richardson took a shovel pass and went five yards for the score. It was the first of three scores for Richardson on the day.

HSU scored on a 55-yard pass from Bernhard to Matt Epperson the first of two TDs between the pair in the game. Bernhard made it 28-7 with a 5-yard keeper with 5:46 to go in the first half. Sul scored on a Thomas Duff 35-yard field goal to make it 28-10 at the half.

In the second half Richardson scored at the 9:20 mark on an 11-yard pass from Austin Davidson and then Epperson scored on the next series for the Cowboys on a 30-yard pass from Bernhard.

Duff's 33-yard FG made it 35-20 at the 2:27 mark and Will Galusha returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a score. It was the second straight week the Cowboys have returned a kick for a touchdown to make it 42-20 with 2:08 to go in the third.

Richardson cut the Cowboy led to 15 when he scored on a 3-yard pass from Davidson with 13:!5 to go in the fourth quarter. HSU took the final 6:46 off the clock on its final drive.

HSU had 454 yards of offense. Matt Epperson caught three balls for 101 yards and two scores.

HSU (5-0, 4-0 in ASC) return to action next weekend at Shelton Stadium for the homecoming game with East Texas Baptist. Sul Ross State fell to 2-3 on the year and 1-3 in league play.
