Cowboys Fall To UMHB

Oct. 7, 2006

Final Stats

BELTON, Texas - Mary Hardin-Baylor came up with a strong defensive effort in the second half forcing two interceptions and taking advantage of a short field twice for touchdowns as the Crusaders overcame a Hardin-Simmons 10-7 halftime lead for a 28-16 win Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action at Tiger Field.

The game had an interesting start as the Crusaders took the opening kickoff and Jarvis Thrasher appeared to be shielding his eyes from the sun, but the officials ruled he was calling for a fair catch at the five yard line. The Cowboys forced a punt and then drove down and eventually settled for a 3-0 lead on a Scott Bryant 30-yard field goal.

The Crusaders then took the lead on a Freddie Rollins 5-yard touchdown run. It was setup when the Crusaders partially blocked a Justin Feaster punt and up-man Josh Kubiak took the short kick in front of the Cowboy coverage and ran it back to the HSU five yard line.

HSU responded with a 10-play, 85-yard drive for a touchdown. Jordan Neal hit Patrick Shelby on a quick hitter from 17-yards out over the middle. On the drive Neal became the Cowboys' all-time leading passer, passing Kevin Beam's record of 6,619 yards on a 25-yard pass to Will Galusha.

Mary Hardin-Baylor had a 15-play, 80-yard drive in the third quarter and Rollins capped it with a 2-yard touchdown run. After the first Neal interception of the second half, the Cowboys had the Crusaders at third-down and eight but the Crusaders hit the Cowboys with a halfback pass from Chris Owen to Cole Smith to make it 21-10.

After the second interception, Owen scored from three-yard outs after Smith caught a 29-yard pass to set-up the Crusaders. HSU scored late on a Will Galusha touchdown pass from Neal.

HSU had 322 yards of offense in the game and limited the Crusaders to 201 yards, but the short field was the difference in the game as the Crusaders scored on drives of five, 18 and 32 yards in the game.

The Cowboys are 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in conference play. Hardin-Simmons will host East Texas Baptist next Saturday at Shelton Stadium at 2 p.m. UMHB took control of the conference race and improved to 4-1 on the year and 4-0 in league play.
