ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' football team dominated all three phases of the game and soundly defeated Louisiana College, 57-3, in its home opener in front of 3,329 fans at Shelton Stadium on Saturday in Abilene. Senior wide receiver Joe Lemberg had six catches for 188 yards and three touchdowns, as the Cowboys gained 456 yards of total offense. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Neal was 14-of-21 for 285 yards and three scores. The defense also had a dominating day limiting to 256 yards and may of those came with the game well out of reach. Jim Abbate's crew stopped the Wildcats on 17 of 21 third-down attempts and did not allow but three points in three trips to the red zone by LC. The defense also recovered a fumble for a touchdown, from 12 yards out by Reggie Robinson. Jason Rupert led the way with 12 tackles. Adam Parker and Brent Gailey added nine each. Special teams had a stellar day with Parker blocking a punt for a safety and on the ensuing free kick Jared May returned the ball 86 yards for a touchdown. May also had a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown. HSU jumped out early with a 25-yard field goal by Mason Grimes. At 4:31 to go in the first quarter Neal hit Jones for the first of three touchdowns, the PAT was no good and HSU led 9-0. The Wildcats responded with a 37-yard field goal by Nathan Firlow, before Lemberg struck again. This time he took a screen pass, that Neal checked to at the line and went 76 yards. Robinson then scored to give the Cowboys a 22-3 halftime lead. Donta' Hayward, who saw his most extensive duty of the season plowed in on an option play from two-yards out with 10:23 to go to give the Cowboys a 28-3 lead. After a quick three-and-out by the Wildcats, Neal and Lemberg hooked up on a perfect 39-yard fade. After May's heroics, Dustin Bookhout score the Cowboys' last touchdown on a 1-yard run. Grimes PAT gave the Cowboys the final margin of 57-3. HSU (21-, 2-0 in ASC) will travel to Mississippi College, next Saturday for a 2 p.m. game. Louisiana College fell to 1-2, 1-1. |
