ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' fifth-ranked football team continued its offensive assault on its opponents with a 49-19 win over Mississippi College Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Football action at Shelton Stadium in Abilene. The Cowboys once again started slow but came on strong. For the second straight week the Cowboys did not score in the first quarter, but HSU rolled of 21 points in the second period and rolled to 28 points in the second half. HSU had 522 yards of total offense, including 311 on the ground, making it the third straight game the Cowboys have been over 500 and 300, respectively. HSU did not allow a sack for the third straight game, as Jordan Neal went 19-for-23. He had a stretch where he hit 18-of-19 passes. Lance Moore ran for 144 yards on 22 carries and scored three times. It marked the seventh straight game Moore has gone over the 100-yard mark. The Cowboys got on the board with 9:46 to go in the first half on a 2-yard Moore run. Shane McCord added the first of seven straight extra points. Donta' Hayward added a 3-yard run at the 4:22 mark to make it 14-0, before Charmer Moore scored on a blown coverage in the secondary from 27-yards out from Trey Clark. HSU ran the perfect two-minute offense to score again right before halftime. Neal drove the team seven-plays and 67 yards capping the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Andre Washington to make it 21-7 at halftime. Moore had a pair of third-quarter TD runs of nine and one yard. Bryan Shumaker added a score for Mississippi College to make it 35-13 after three quarters. In the fourth, Charmer Moore scored on a 36-yard pass from Clark to close the gap to 35-19 with 13:32 to go. HSU then scored on a Len Williams touchdown pass from Neal. Patrick Shelby closed the Cowboy scoring with a 15-yard run on a fly sweep to make it 49-19. Micah Putnam and Brent Gailey led the Cowboy defense with 11 tackles each. Dusty Finley and Stephen Gordon had 10 each to lead MC. Will Galusha and Travis Craver had interceptions for the Cowboys. HSU improved to 3-0 on the year and 2-0 in ASC play. Mississippi College fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in ASC play. HSU plays at arch-rival Howard Payne on Oct. 2. --- HSU Athletics --- |
